Brick-Tie wall tie technicians are busy completing remedial wall tie installation on one of Hudderfield’s landmark housing blocks.
The ten story Richmond flats are on the junction of Leeds Road near the town center and are subject to an extensive refurbishment by Kirklees Council, with help from the European Union development fund. Clugston are the main contractor for this project and required a reliable wall tie specialist to complete installation of new Helifix stainless steel wall ties.
After a tender process Brick-Tie were awarded the contract. The work is being supervised by one of our wall tie installers; Craig Tarbotton, who, with his fellow technician Ryan Shann, holds a City and Guilds NVQ qualification in wall tie replacement.
Clugston are very health and safety aware, so Craig’s recent 91% score in his IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health), ‘Managing Safety’ course, came in handy. Our MD Bryan Hindle is keen on health and safety too, so he attended Glugston’s site safety induction, with Craig and Ryan …
“The induction was very thorough and detailed, presented well by the site manager and was easily the most comprehensive and well thought-out I’ve attended” says Bryan, “Site inductions are a legal requirement and sometimes I find that they are somewhat basic and lack enthusiasm.. Not in this case though, I congratulate the entire Clugston team, for the effort they are putting into health, safety and welfare – outstanding”
Consulting structural Engineers Adept, of Leeds worked with Remedial wall tie manufacturer Helifix to design and implement the new system. Extensive proof testing was carried out to cater for the unusual construction in the building, where low strength thin section blockwork had been used for some sections, during construction, back in the 1950’s.
The Helifix RestiTie system was found to meet the design criteria, offering great performance in the soft blocks with tension testing results exceeding requirements. The installation density was increased to meet building regulations (DD140), where one of the cavity wall skins is less than 90mm thick, as in this case.
Over 6000 Wall Ties installed.
The 6000+ Helifix wall ties are being installed at a rate of 5 ties m2 with extensive recorded tension tests to 1.5KN. The tests are carried out using one of our four calibrated tension-testing rigs. The rig allows our technicians to replicate the wind ‘pull-out’ forces the new ties will be subjected to, in this very exposed site, at the foot of the Pennines.
The remedial wall tie installation benefits from the unique Helifix Approved Installer Insurance Scheme. This includes insurance liability for the entire wall tie process, including the design, material and workmanship. The comprehensive cover is the market leader and is only available through Helifix and only when a Helifix approved installer like Brick-Tie is used.
